How to Test Well Water: Step-by-Step Instructions

2026-03-12 · 5 min read · Guide

Step 1: Choose a Certified Lab

Contact your state health department for a list of certified drinking water labs. Costs range from $25 for a basic bacteria test to $200-$400 for comprehensive panels. Some state labs offer discounted testing for private well owners.

Step 2: Get the Right Kit

Request a sampling kit from the lab. It will include sterile bottles, preservatives (for some tests), and instructions. Do not use your own containers as they may introduce contamination.

Step 3: Collect Samples Properly

Remove any faucet aerator or filter. Run cold water for 2-3 minutes (or as directed). Fill bottles without touching the inside of the cap. Keep samples cold (not frozen) and deliver to the lab within the time specified, usually 24-48 hours.

Step 4: Interpret Results

Compare your results against EPA Maximum Contaminant Levels (MCLs). If any parameter exceeds limits, retest to confirm, then pursue treatment options. Use our contaminant database to understand what levels mean in your state.
