Well Water & Babies: Nitrate, Lead & Safe Formula Preparation

Nitrate: The Primary Risk
Nitrate above 10 mg/L can cause methemoglobinemia ("blue baby syndrome") in infants under six months. Babies are uniquely vulnerable because their digestive systems convert nitrate to nitrite more readily than adults. Boiling water concentrates nitrate and makes it worse.
Lead Exposure
Any detectable level of lead is concerning for infants. Lead affects brain development even at very low levels. If your well or plumbing has lead components, use only cold water for formula (hot water dissolves more lead) and flush pipes for 30 seconds before use.
Testing Before Baby Arrives
Test your well water for: nitrate, lead, coliform bacteria, and arsenic before bringing a newborn home. If any contaminant exceeds safe levels, use bottled water for formula preparation until treatment is installed.
Safe Practices
Use reverse osmosis-filtered water for formula preparation. If using well water directly, ensure it has been tested and is within safe limits. Never boil well water as a substitute for treatment. If in doubt, use commercially bottled water labeled for infant use.
